Vintage Central Scientific Wimshurst Machine Cranked Electrostatic Generator
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:236428 |
Here's a really nice and relatively compact Wimshurst electrostatic ...machine manufactured and distributed by the Central Scientific Company (CENCO) in Chicago, IL. Not sure when it was made, but I would guess it's about 60 or 70 years old. Construction is primarily nickel-plated brass, Pyrex glass, hard rubber and bakelite. The discs are made of plexiglass.
The machine is just 17" wide and is an ideal size for displaying on a shelf or countertop.
Condition is excellent throughout, as you can see in the photographs, particularly for an apparatus that probably did its fair share of "hard time" in a high school or college physics lab. Both of the original leather drive belts are present, but the rear belt is slack, and the front belt is broken. I tried to re-staple the front belt, but it's too short and will need to be replaced if you wish to make the machine operational.
Both discs are in excellent condition, and the sectors are intact. Brushes and collectors are in excellent condition, too. The Leyden jar capacitors have no cracks, chips or other damage. Original brown enamel on the base, with only scattered minor marks.
I suspect that with new belts, the machine will work as designed, but it's nonetheless being offered for historical and/or display purposes only, with no explicit or implied guarantees that it will generate sparks when the discs are spinning.
Measures approximately 18" wide x 15" high x 10" deep.
Shipping weight, properly packed, will be approximately 22 lb.
That's about it. I will package it properly so that it arrives at your doorstep safely. I have been shipping antique phonographs and radios for years, and if you check my feedback, you'll see that I know how to do it correctly. Buyer prepays and includes shipping.
