Mid/late 19th century needlepoint - c.1870 or slightly earlier. Worked in wool on gauze, this needlepoint is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The scene is a winsome one of in which a young woman wearing flowers in her hair, a flower basket over her arm, is standing in a garden setting with here pet spaniel sitting at her feet. dog standing nearby gazes up at his mistress. The couple are framed by trees and flowers with a stretch of water behind them which has a tow...er peeking out of the trees lining it.The visible gauze around the edges has overall discolouration consistent with its age with remnants of the original edging cloth which have visible tack marks from where the needlepoint has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time. The colours of the wool are good with an area of damage just above the girl's eyebrow and a small area of stitch loss above her flower basket. The last photo is of the reverse of the wool work and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched.Measures 14 1/2" x 17 1/4" to the edges of the stitching.
