Mid 19th century needlepoint picture c.1860 or slightly later. Worked in wool on gauze this needlepoint is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The gauze has been stitched with an ovoid framework surrounding a black background whilst the outer area around the ovoid is stitched with a red background with a floral border on top. The black background area contains a delightful image of a young girl dressed in blue holding her pet spaniel who is looking adoringly at his mi...stress. The needlepoint is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is a split around the gold stitch work of the curve in the upper left quadrant, but it isn't too noticeable. Looking at the back of the frame it would appear that the needlepoint has been removed from it at some point of time as there is a much later backing board on it. As such it is possible that the needlework was placed onto a new backing cloth of a similar colour at that time thus camouflaging the damage. The needlepoint is contained within a mid 19th century bird's eye maple frame with gilt slip, possibly original to the piece. Both are in good condition with some scratches and scuff marks to the frame commensurate with its age and some slight separation to the mitres.Measures 11" x 11" (sight size) and 14 1/2" x 14 1/2" including the frame.
