Here is a rare, framed double-sided vellum leaf from a Medieval illuminated manuscript of the BOOK OF HOURS, featuring a list of saint names. I don't know its exact date of origin, but I've been told that it dates from the 13th-early 14th century. The wood frame measures 8 7/8" x 10 3/8" - the visible part of the leaf itself, which is mounted inside a mat, measures 4 1/2" x 4 7/8". It has been kept by a family in a smoke- and pet-free home for generations.
There is an illuminated de...tail on the upper left of the front image above the list of names, and the lovely, delicate hand-painted multi-colored floral imagery that runs down the sides on both front and back has gold accents. As you can see if the close view photos, there is some "bleeding" of front to back and vice versa (due to the thin nature of the leaf), but the list of names is clear.
There appears to be some wrinkling on the leaf and what may be a small inner tear, but I haven't made any attempt to open the frame. I've described it as thoroughly as I can; email with any questions. Thanks!
