This fabulous "J. T. Lechter" "Superior Blowpipe Set" for testing minerals in the field was manufacured by "The Society of Arts" and this set was retailed by "S. Henson & Co., Mineralogist, 277, Strand, London".The use of the blowpipe in its' application to mineral analysis were pioneered in Sweden by a small band of 18th century scientists. Their methods were further refined at the Freiberg Mining Academy in the middle 1800's. Blowpipe apparatus was constantly improved and modified u...ntil the 1860's. Blowpipes have been used to identify which elements are present in a mineral sample, for example blowpipes were used in the original discoveries of about a dozen elements, from nickel (in 1751) to indium (in 1863).The well made mahogany box contains a lift out box wood tray with various compartments containing a selection of tools, including the blowpipe, a small anvil and hammer, pestle and mortar, spirit lamp and a number of chemical containers and glass tubes.The contents listing is detailed on the label to the underside of the lid. There are a few items missing, the small china mixing bowl and magnet appear to be gone.The label has faded in places over the years, but for the most part the writing and logos are legible.The box itself has taken on a lovely depth of colour and patina over the years, however, it does have the expected scuffs, scratches and marks you would expect from the years of use. Unfortunately, there is no key. I have tried to show the condition in the photographs.The box measures 27 cm (10 1/2 inches) long, 12.5 cm (5 inches) wide. It is 8 cm (3 1/4 inches) deep.These boxes are now so rare, and it's wonderful to find one with its' trade label intact and the mjority of its' contents. Vintage c1880 ~ "J. T.
