Antique Chestnut Entry Door w/Half-length Window
Wonderful, antique, front entrance door salvaged from an old home in Cape May, New Jersey. The door has a solid chestnut core covered with 1/8" thick chestnut veneers on each side. It a single window (no glass) with a single panel below. The panel is raised on the front and recessed (flat) on the back.
Please note that chestn...ut is a rare and valuable wood; it’s not commercially available due to the blight introduced between 1900 & 1908, which made the North American chestnut trees virtually extinct by 1940. Please don't think that "veneer" means inferior quality. Unlike the paper-thin veneers used on modern doors and furniture, these veneers are thick and provide strength and stability to the door. It could be refinished many times without sanding down to the core wood.
Hardware: The door is not equipped with hardware. However, we have a good selection of period hardware to outfit the door (check out our eBay store).* If you would like any of the hardware holes plugged with solid wood, please email us for a quote.Uneven Width:The door's width was unevenly cut by 1/4" at some point, most likely to compensate for an old warped floor or settling foundation. We could cut the door to an even 34", cut it shorter/narrower, or even build it up to make it taller/wider--email us for a quote.Condition: Considering that this door was used for over a century, it's in very good condition. It's strong and sturdy, but does have scraped, missing, and dented veneer (see close up photos). These bad spots could be replaced or filled in using chestnut or oak (very similar grain). Otherwise, the door only has the typical scrapes, scratches, and small nail holes that you would expect to find on a door this old. These blemishes could be filled or removed during the finishing process. Whatever remains will be covered by paint or appear as a "character mark" if you choose to stain and finish. Refinish/Repaint: We could refinish, repaint, or partially or completely strip the door to prepare it for you to repaint or refinish. See the last photos in this auction as an example of our work. Email us with a small description of what you would like done, and we'll give you a quote.Swing: The door is currently set up to swing into a house, towards the left. However, we can modify the door to swing in a different direction--Email us for a quote.Modification: We could also modify this door to fit your opening or suite your needs. We could make a frame, trim or add to the height or width, add glass, reverse the swing, plug the hardware holes, etc. Email us with a small description of what you would like done, and we'll give you a quote.
