Here is a marvelous Victorian era piece. Beautifully done in a black paper mache background accented with gilt frieze around the raised center edges. A detailed gilt scene on the top is inlaid with Mother of Pearl. Vine and leafing designs in gilt with in-set MOP go around the top outer edge of the lid. On the front of the box is a beautiful flower & leaf design, again with gilt and MOP. The back is solid black as is the bottom, each of... the sides shows a lacy gilt design, with gilt designs on all four legs. There is a keyhole in the front but no key, a brass plate along the front edge as shown reads; a Crown over V.R. - Patent. A few minor nicks to the legs age and use related. When opened the inside is done in a wine color velvet fabric with a rick-rack style edging.
This measures 8.75" wide side to side x 5.75" deep front to back x 5.75" high top to bottom x 3.5" deep inside and weighs 1 lb 10.9ozs. This is in great condition for its age and use. What a wonderful addition to your vintage box collection.
