Vintage Surgical tool no longer in use! 1880-1910 era. The trepan was a small tube-shaped saw that was operated in the fashion of a wimble, in which a handle was used to turn the teeth of the saw like a screw. Its primary use was in the making of a channel through the skull, into which another instrument could be inserted for the removal of bone fragments that impinged upon the brain following traumatic injury. The procedure, known as trepanning, was thought to also relieve intra...cranial compression by allowing the escape of effused blood. The trepan was succeeded by the trephine, which employed a cross handle and a centre-pin to stabilize the saw as it first cut a circular groove into the cranium. The pin was then removed, in order to prevent it from penetrating into the dura mater as the saw bored more deeply into the bone. Although the trephine is no longer used in Western medicine.
