Original Description:
This is a small pot decorated in thick Cuerda Seca enamels with floral and Islamic decorations Originating from Persia/Syria. Dimension: diameter at the base: c. 8 cm, diameter at the rim: 6.5 cm - 6.3 cm high.Cuerda Seca enameling is done in the following manner: The design isstamped or carved into the surface after which colored glazes are applied. Thecontours of the designs are detailed with a mixture of beeswax or vegetable fatand manganese oxide. During the firing, the wax or... fat burns away producingcontours of red or black that also prevent the differently-coloured glazes fromrunning into one another. This technique was created during the Seljuk(14th-15th C.) period in Persia, (modern Iran and Iraq) and eventually made itsway via Syria, Turkey, Greece, and Italy to Spain where it is used extensivelyin tile and pottery making even today.
