C1900 - 1910 Antique GENERAL ELECTRIC GE " LUMINOUS " Electric Street Light ARC LAMP
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:24402929 |
This GENERAL ELECTRIC "LUMINOUS" MODEL ELECTRIC ARC LAMP was used to illuminate streets and buildings at the turn of the century before the large light bulbs became reliable enough to withstand the cold, moisture and heat of outdoor use.
Most all of the arc lamps were scrapped during the World War 1 scrap metal drives, so very few of these have survived.
Wea...r, scratches, dings, surface aberrations, rust and in some cases deterioration of coil windings and insulation, chips to porcelain, wear to wiring cloth, etc. is consistent with age and use. Please see all photos, as they are part of the description. The porcelain grommets that shield the pair of entry wires at the side of the top cast iron main housing are damaged and chipped and not seated completely. See photos.
Of the GE "Luminous" model arc laps shown on the Internet, few can be seen as being complete. Often they have been "electrified" to use regular light bulbs and their arc lamp 'guts' have removed and scraped. As well, many of those that have survived also have had their carbon arc rodsliding support arm removed. The GE "Luminous" model archlamp on offer has all of its partsas can be seen.
Over-all the arc lamp measures 15" diameter and 26" tall. Lacks a glass globe, otherwise essentially complete save for a few missing set screws here or there.
