Original Description:
Exceptionally rare and original, ca1899 Cabinet Card Photograph of a young and beautiful, Native American Kiowa Indian Mother named Mrs. Red Buffalo and her two beautiful, young children by Oklahoma Territory female photographer Annette Hume. This wonderful, period, Card Mount Photograph measures approx. 3 7/8” by 4 7/8” and is mounted on its original Card Mount (overall size is 5 3/8” by 6 3/8”).
The Card Mount carries the mark of the publisher – ...Ray R. Hume. Ray Hume was the son of the female Western Photographer Annette Ross Hume of Andarko, Indian Territory (Oklahoma). Apparently he published this Image, taken by his mother, under his own name. There is a manuscript notation on the mount, likely in the hand of Ray Hume that reads “Frau & Kindd & Kaals(?)”. The University of Oklahoma Libraries, Western History Collection holds a number of Annette Ross Hume’s original negatives including the negative for this Image. There the beautiful young mother is identified as “Mrs. Red Buffalo and her children” (Phillips 103).
Annette Ross Hume documented the daily life of the Kiowa, Comanche and Wichita people of the Oklahoma Territory in the late 19th century. As far as we have been able to find, the Cabinet card Photograph offered here is among only a handful of period Images taken by Annette Hume produced from her negatives in the 19th century. We have been unable to find a single example of ANY period Cabinet card Photograph by Annette Hume in any Museum or Library collection. The University of Oklahoma Libraries, Western History Collection holds 750 of her original, glass plate negatives and if not for that collection, Annette Hume’s amazing archive would have been lost to history.
When Annette Ross Hume stepped out of the wagon in Anadarko, Oklahoma Territory, just after dark on December 31, 1890, she gave no hint of the artist she would soon become. From the opening of the town until a year later, Annette recorded life in the tent city: the construction of wooden and brick structures, settlers waiting for mail, schoolchildren posed on Main Street, and numerous other scenes related to the opening of the frontier town. The photographs of the establishment of Anadarko comprise a large portion of Annette's surviving glass plate collection.
Annette's photographic work ended by 1910. Her growing community service and her failing health restricted her camera work. Her photographs might have languished in obscurity had it not been for Edward Everett Dale, head of the history department at the University of Oklahoma. Dale collected books, pamphlets, manuscripts, and photographs about western Americana and Oklahoma history for use by his graduate students.
Through Annette's son, C. Ross, a judge in Anadarko, Dale learned of Annette's photography, her collection of glass plate negatives, and her desire that her collection remain in Oklahoma. Following personal visits and correspondence with Dale, Annette agreed to sell her glass plates to OU. In preparation for the plates' shipment to the university, Annette carefully identified each image. In 1927, more that seven hundred and fifty of her negatives were delivered to the university campus at Norman, Oklahoma. Annette's glass plates became the core photographic collection of the Phillips Collection when it was established by Dale, with the assistance of Patrick Hurley and the financial gift of Oklahoma oilman Frank Phillips. (The Phillips Collection and the Division of Manuscript eventually combined to form the current Western History Collections, University of Oklahoma Libraries).
Annette lived to see several of her images published, apparently for the first time (except for the Cabinet Cards offered here – unknown to the Oklahoma University). Since then her photographs have been used by hundreds of authors to illustrate books and articles on topics dealing with Oklahoma, Western history and the American Indian. And her images have also been used in exhibits around the United States and in television documentaries.
We believe that never before has an example of a period, 1890’s Cabinet Card Photo by Annette Hume been offered for sale making the Image offered here a true historical treasure.
