James William Lowther, 1st Viscount Ullswater James WilliamLowther, 1st Viscount Ullswater was born on 1 April 1855.2 He was the son ofHon. William Lowther and Hon. Charlotte Alice Parke.1 He married Mary FrancesBeresford-Hope, daughter of Sir Alexander James Beresford Beresford-Hope andLady Mildred Arabella Charlotte Gascoyne-Cecil, on 1 March 1886.2 He died on 27March 1949 at age 93. He was educatedat Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.2 He was educated at King'sCollege London, London, England.2 He graduated from Trinity College, CambridgeUniversity, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, with a Master of Law (LL.M.)2He was admitted to Inner Temple in 1879 entitled to practise as a barrister.2He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Rutlandbetween 1883 and 1885.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.)(Conservative) for Mid-Cumberland between 1886 and 1921.2 He held the office ofJustice of the Peace (J.P.) for Cumberland.2 He held the office ofParliamentary Under-Secretary, Foreign Affairs between 1891 and 1892.2 He heldthe office of Deputy Speaker, House of Commons between 1895 and 1905.2 He wasappointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) on 18 July 1898.2 He held the office ofJustice of the Peace (J.P.) for Suffolk.2 He held the office of Speaker, Houseof Commons between 1902 and 1921.2 He held the office of Bencher of InnerTemple in 1906.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1917 in the 5thBattalion, Suffolk Volunteer Regiment.2 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1921.2 He was created 1st Viscount Ullswater, ofCampsea Ashe, Suffolk [U.K.] on 8 July 1921.2 He was Trustee, British Museumbetween 1922 and 1931.2 He held the office of Trustee, National PortraitGallery in 1924.2 He wrote the book A Speaker's Commentaries, published 1925.2He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of NationalBiography.3
