This is a good British 1796 Pattern heavy cavalry trooper's sword and scabbard; this type of sword was carried by the Scot's Greys at Waterloo.  Many examples are encountered with the narrow langets remov...ed, this sword retains them.  The only modification to this sword was the cutting away of the sharp inner edge of the disc guard as it tended to fray the wearer's jacket.  This is a commonly seen modification on these swords.  Originally, this sword had a hatchet point, but as in the case of most of them, it was modified to a spear point for functionality.  The sword's blade is in good condition, there are no cracks or bends, the tip is good, there are old areas of pitting along the lower part of the blade and near the tip.  This is not active rust or pitting and does not affect the integrity of the sword.  There is a proof mark on the right side of the blade which is a crown over a 12.  As previously stated, both langets are present as is a leather buffer pad.  The leather grip is in good condition showing only several areas of loss; the ears, back strap and fuller are tight, there is no play or wiggle.  The disc guard is in good condition, it is highly patinated.  The scabbard is in very good condition for its age, there are several small dents but they do not affect the integrity of it or the ability to insert the sword.  The chape is good, there are no holes, cracks or breaks.  Both hanging rings are tightly attached, both screws are present at the top and the mouth is tightly attached.  Overall, the sword is 40 1/4" long, the blade is 34 3/4".  This is a seldom seen sword made famous more recently as the sword carried by Richard Sharpe in the Bernard Cornwell series of books and movies.  These swords are listed well over $1000, we are listing this one at a more reasonable price.  It would make a wonderful addition and would be the centerpiece of any British 18th Century collection.
