Civil War Discharge for Joseph J. Gill, a 1st Sergeant in Company "C" 65th New York Infantry, given on 17 July 1865 at Hall's Hills, Virginia, by reason of order from the War Department. Gill was born in Ireland. Signed at bottom by a 1st Lieutenant in the 65th and by a Brevet Major as Commissary of Musters, and signed at top by a comptroller and paymaster. On the verso is a Solicitor's stamp dated 1891, a stamp from Cypress Hills National Cemetery in New York where G...ill is buried, and docketing signed by the Superintendent of the cemetery.
Gill began the war as a Private in the 67th New York Infantry, served three years in that regiment attaining the rank of Sergeant when in the summer of 1864 he was among veterans who were consolidated into the 65th New York Infantry. At the end of the war he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 65th after serving for four years in the war.
In good condition, has tears and small splits at the folds, some staining and pinholes, and heavy creases.
