Original Description:
Promotion document appointing Joseph J. Gill a 1st Sergeant in Company "C" 65th New York Infantry, to rank from 20 December 1864, given at Hall's Hills, Virginia on 1 January 1865.  At bottom left it is signed by the regiment's adjutant C.A. Baker and what looks like a lieutenant.  At bottom right it is signed by the 65th's commander Henry C. Fisk as Colonel.  Fisk was brevetted a Brigadier General for his actions at the end of the war at Petersburg (specifically on 6 Ap...ril 1865 in H.G. Wright's VI Corps at Sayler's Creek) and had quite an interesting post-war career, deserting his family and living under an alias.
Gill began the war as a Private in the 67th New York Infantry, served three years in that regiment attaining the rank of Sergeant when in the summer of 1864 he was among veterans who were consolidated into the 65th New York Infantry.  At the end of the war he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 65th after serving for four years in the war.

In poor to good condition, most of the faults are around the borders including tears, splits at some of the folds, heavy creases, some staining and a few tape repairs on the back of the document.
