ENGLISH M. 1853 CAVALRY SABER - CONFEDERATE ID
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:24981965 |
A well made English saber having an almost straight, 33" blade, spear pointed/double-edged the final 14". The cond. of blade is VG, bright & no rust. The iron three-branch guard is also bright steel. The grip is composed of hard, checkered leather. T...here are no British ownership marks which is correct for export weapons. Stamped on the underside of the guard is "J.K.S. 4 VA C" The marks look to be of the period, interestingly, the "S" is stamped upside down. Presumably this saber was used by Pvt. J. Kerfoot Sower, Co. H, 4th Regt. Va. Cavalry. There were archive papers with this saber for many years, now misplaced, but it is believed Sower was killed at Spotsylvania Court House in 1864. No Scabbard.
Please note: Due to the inconclusive nature of many die stamped objects, Bellinger's Military Antiques does not accept responsibility for the authenticity of these markings..
