CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS' ID TAG DOG TAG IDENTIFICATION TAG 1800's VERY NICE! ROUND SHAPE.
Dates back to the mid 1800's. They were primarily used for soldiers' identification tags. If you're reading this ad you already know how rare the tag is, and the fact it's blank and not stamped or engraved makes it even rarer.
During the Civil War soldiers often wore these types of ID tags just in case they were killed, their family members could be notified. Soldiers often wore these ta...g around their necks or had them sewn in their cloathes. Dog tags as we know today did not exist during the Civil War.
Made out of nickel-silver also called German silver. Nickel silver is stronger and more expensive than brass. And, it doesn't tarnish as much as brass. Back in the day manufacturers chose nickel-silver over brass for higher quality items like this tag. Extremely rare NOS, new old stock from the Civil War era. Amazing! Made in the USA.
This was part of an enormous Texas locksmith collection with items dating back to the early 1800's.
