William Woods, French’sBattery, UCV, Confederate Southern Cross of Honor This Southern Cross of Honor isone of a collection of 15 Southern Cross United Confederate VeteransApplications that I am parting out on EBay from UCV Camp 1446 of Giles County, Virginia.Afterthe War Between the States, there was no official recognition of the service ofConfederate Veterans, as the U.S. War Department did not, until much later, recognize these men as Veterans. Furthermore, metal was sc...arce, so nonewere awarded by the Confederate Government during the War. Around the turn ofthe twentieth century, the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) created amedal appropriate for the defenders in grey; one which would show theirappreciation to their Confederate ancestors and also, honor their heritage. Themedal was called the Southern Cross of Honor. Thousands of these medals wereawarded. Winnie Davis, daughter of Confederate President, Jefferson Davis, traveled around the South bestowing these medals to these aging ConfederateVeterans. Theseapplications were required to be filled out to confirm military service andreceive a Southern Cross medal. The 15 applications I acquired came from apaper dealer in Maryland. This was the largest cache that I have seen comingfrom a defunct UDC chapter. This document originated from United ConfederateVeterans Camp 1446 in Pearisburg, GilesCounty, Virginia, and all the signatures are of Confederate Veterans. Camp 1446operated from 1903 until the 1920’s, and closed their doors after the veteranshad passed away. This application is for Private William Penn Woods. Woods enlisted on March 9, 1862 into Co. B, French’s Battery, Starks Battalion, Light Artillery. He was wounded in battlenear Fort Harrison in 1864 and surrendered at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. Theapplication is dated 1907. Most importantly this application is signed by Capt.French, his company commander. Thanks for looking and good luck bidding.
