A very nice original example of the classic German Model 1871 Mauser rifle bayonet which features a brass hilt. This sword bayonet was intended for use with either the 11mm M1871 Mauser Rifle or the 8mm M1888 Commission Rifle. The M1871 bayonet has a brass grip with diagonal serrations on the right grip while the left grip is smooth. The blade which is fullered on both sides measures approximately 18 1/2" long. The bayonet and its correct scabbard are both regimental marked 100. R. 5. ...36. The blade was manufactured by W. R. Kirschbaum Soligen and is marked as such on the tang. The blade is also stamped on the spine with a crown over a "W" (Wilhelm), also 74 under the "W" indicating year of manufacture as being 1874. The correct matching scabbard is made of black leather with brass tip and throat. Condition - bayonet is in ice shape with working spring loaded button and no nicks or pitting in the blade just some light surface age discoloration as shown. The scabbard is also in very nice condition with pliable not dried out leather the only defect being the loss of the small screw which holds the top rim of the throat in place. This item is completely fresh to the market from the estate of a old time collector.
