MYSTIC MOAI Chunky handmade stone statue, quartzite-limestone composite (not plastic), 14 cm tall, 7.5 cm width, with authentic back carvings.The mysterious Moai statues of Easter Island have baffled seafarers for centuries, raising questions about giants and lost civilizations. Looming from the barren landscape like ancient sentinels, three hundred of them once created an unbroken line around the edge of the island. Another six hundred in various stages of completion are scattered ar...ound, nearly all carved from the black volcanic basalt of Rano Raraku volcano. Ranging from about 14 feet (4.5 meters) to as tall as 30 feet and weighing more than 80 tons, the majority were carved between 1000 and 1650 AD. They were also back-carved with clan initiation symbols, although weather has eroded much of these features. The statues were not only symbols of authority and power but to the people who erected them, they were actual repositories of spirit charged by a magical power called "mana." Some researchers today believe the ring of quartz-studded statues encircling the island focussed the magnetic flux of the local environment in much the same way as ancient stone circles found in Europe and Australia were set up to recharge the landscape.
