Handsome antique vase in the Arts & Crafts taste, possibly by the Saturday Evening Girls/Revere Pottery or Hampshire Pottery, circa 1910s - 1920s, the wheel-turned body of squat ovoid form with flaring rim, finished in a mustard yellow matte glaze, approx. 4-1/4" tall, the underside incised with what appears to be either an M or H in a circle. A few scattered areas of fine, faint crazing, otherwise very fine condition, with no cracks or chips.Though I was unable to trace the maker ...with 100% certainty, and the glaze completely covers all surfaces of the clay (which might otherwise provide an additional clue), the vase was clearly made by an experienced hand, as the potting is completely uniform, the form absolutely even and symmetrical throughout all 360 degrees--indicating a high degree of skill. I was able to find two other vases of very similar form, size, and glaze by Revere Pottery, perhaps indicating the hand of someone affiliated with that firm. (This distinctive matte mustard yellow was one of the most characteristic glazes used by the Saturday Evening Girls.) The "M in circle" mark was used on early wares by Hampshire Pottery of Keene, New Hampshire; moreover, a similar yellow glaze is also seen on some Hampshire wares. Given the high degree of craftsmanship and the fact that the vase was found in south central New Hampshire, either seems a distinct possibility.
