RARE Vintage Piezoelectric Fan For Early Apple Macintosh Computers 128K 512K
Item History & Price
You are bidding on a very rare 3rd-party upgrade for vintage Apple Macintosh computers: A piezoelectric cooling fan.
Apple's first Macintosh computers, the 128K and the 512K famously had no cooling fans. Apple touted how quiet they were compared to noisy IBM PC's with cooling fans. But some users worried that their prized Macs would overheat and burn out. So several companies rushed to make retrofit fans to fit these early Macs. Among the most interesti...ng of these add-on fans is this one.
It was made by Piezo Electric Products of New Jersey. Piezoelectricity is the phenomenon whereby movement of certain crystals can produce an electric signal. This was the basis for the first phonograph cartridges. Less well known is the fact that electricity applied to such crystals can make them move. This piezo fan is based on the latter effect: 125-volts AC is applied to a piezoelectric crystal which is glued to two thin flexible plastic blades, and the blades begin moving rapidly back and forth, thus moving air. Very clever.
Photo 1 shows this fan running. You can see how the blades are slightly bent, caught in motion by my camera. This fan was designed to mount anywhere extra cooling was wanted inside a compact Mac such as the 128K or 512K. This fan has a cord attached for stand-alone demonstration, but if you want to install it in your make you can simply splice the wires into the AC line in the Mac's power supply so it will run whenever the Mac runs.
This fan has been tested and it works. I can't say that it moves a lot of air, but it does move air and it's a lot quieter than a rotary fan.
