Because I'm dieting, and food (or the lack of it) is on my mind these days, I've put together a delectable smorgasbord of mechanical, technical and musical antiques for you. The only common denominators are age, appearance and appeal. Everything is ancient, everything is clean, and everything is compelling. So take a few minutes to check out the buffet.
Here's an outstanding antique camera outfit that includes an 1880's Rochester Optical tailboard came...ra (with its original plate holder, lens, lens cover and wood carrying case), and a collapsible wood tripod. Everything except the tripod can be stowed in the original Rochester Optical case, which measures just 10" x 11" x 7" when closed. The lightweight, portable tripod (approx. 3 lb.) collapses down to just 29" when not in use.
The camera is original throughout, and its condition, as you can see in the photos, is close to mint. The mahogany body retains its original finish, and it's still as smooth as satin. All of the fittings are original and in pristine condition, like the camera. No fittings are damaged or missing. The camera opens easily, closes easily, and stays rigid when the bed is locked in place. As you can see, it looks great from any angle.
Camera retains its original lens board, its original R.O.C. no. 2 lens, and its original ground glass focusing plate. No misfolds in the bellows, which are original and deep black. Lens element is in excellent condition, ground glass is perfect, with no scratches or damage. Lens throws a crisp image against the ground glass back with sufficient lighting. Original double-slide R.O.C. plate holder is in excellent condition.
Wood carrying case is signed Rochester Optical and is in good condition throughout, with its original hinges, handle and clasp and its original finish. There's an age-related stress crack on the lid, but you'll seldom find an original ROC cabinet that doesn't have a similar crack. They seem to go with the territory.
Tripod folds down to just over 2 feet in length and its legs can be extended to more than 50". Original finish on the wood, with scattered marks in the finish consistent with age and normal handling. All three spikes are still present on the ends of the legs. There's a small chip in the brass sheet metal head, but the tripod is otherwise in excellent condition throughout.
