This small and charming locket appears to date from the late 19th century, say 1880s through 1890s. We believe that it was made in central Europe, Germany, France Austria or near neighbour. It is not marked; tests confirm that it is 9ct gold for its 375 solid gold fineness. It has been bloomed to give it a warm satin finish.It is a small oval with a generous round jump ring. The front panel has a decorating border and plain inner area with an applied ◇ diamond lozenge that has dark ...blue border and is set with four fine lustre seed pearls. The reverse has an engraved border of flowers, an inner shield star, a central oval Greek key frame and engraved leaves to the centre. It opens like a book, the inner covers each hold a small photo. This example has a formally dressed of a proud husband and his wife. The photos are held under glass with an inbuilt frame; please note that the inner frames are not gold, they are base metal with a veneer of gold to the upper surface.The locket is in excellent antique condition with no faults or damage to report, a little light wear; it can be a little stiff and tricky to open.
