Vintage McIntosh MR - 78 Tuner Outstanding Mac ' S Best Stereo Tuner
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:26096198 | Brand: McIntosh |
Here's an excellent, working McIntosh MR-78 stereo tuner. It sold for $1699 when new in 1972 (the equivalent of more than $10, 000 when adjusted for inflation today), and it's still regarded as one of the best stereo tuners ever made, arguably superior to both the Sequerra FM-1 and the Marantz 10-b. The tuner comes from a private audio engineering museum in western North Carolina, and it's one of dozens of vintage audio items from the museum that I'll be listing over the next few months. I'm offering these pieces "as found." Most of them work, but some don't. In all cases, I'll try to provide an accurate assessment of electrical condition and suitability for use based on limited testing. I don't have the time, energy or skill to repair the pieces that aren't working, so please read the descriptions carefully to make sure you get what you're expecting.
Cosmetic condition of this MR-78 tuner is excellent, and it's in excellent operating condition as well. The former owner was a friend of the radio's designer, Richard Modifieri, and -- like Modifieri -- played a key role in audio engineering during the 1970's and 1980's. The radio pulls in distant stations clearly with just a short indoor antenna, and when hooked up to an outdoor antenna, it can clearly tune stations from more than 100 miles away. In all respects, it appears to be electrically sound. Like the Fisher FMR-1 that I listed on ebay last week, this MR-78 was removed from an active audio system on the main floor of the museum.
Clean chassis; clear glass, with no damage; outstanding paint; no rust; no issues. All knobs are correct. All lights and meters are working. Pan-Loc cabinet is original.
Please look at the pictures. They should speak for themselves.
And finally, if you think this tuner is Old School, take a look at my TechnoGallerie website, where you can buy hard-to-find antique phonographs, antique radios, antique cameras and other gadgets you're not likely to see anywhere else. New arrivals include an exceptionally nice 1905 Victor D phonograph with an original Victor spear tip horn and an uncommon 1921 Hatfield Senior interpanel radio made in Indianapolis, Indiana. Just type TechnoGallerie in the address line of your web browser and hit the enter key. TechnoGallerie has a newsletter, too, and if you take a second to sign up for it, you'll receive an email update whenever I list something new on the site -- typically once a week.
FOR SALE TO USA ADDRESSES ONLY. NO INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING. NO EXCEPTIONS. SORRY.
That's about it. I will package the tuner properly so that it arrives at your doorstep safely. I've been shipping fragile electrical antiques for years, and if you check my feedback, you'll see that I know how to do it correctly.
