I am not an expert on planes, but own quite a few and will describe it as best as possible.
• Absolutely beautiful steel, brass and exotic wood (rosewood?) panel plane w/ Alex Mathieson original chip breaker and iron. From my research based on the iron it looks to be made in Glasgow in the mid to late 1850's and up as the mark was changed to "& Son" in 1852 (as shown on this plane's chip breaker). The rosewood front grip and han...dle are in remarkable condition for a possibly 150+ year old tool with only general well weathered marks. . The brass cap and insert in the original chip breaker are both great with some marks on the brass from previous use. The Chip breaker is marked as A Mathieson & Son Glasgow with the Crescent and Star logo. Near the bottom it is marked Solid Steel Warranted. The Iron, which is well worn at the bottom edge and too short for use, is stamped at the top Alex Mathieson & Son Warranted Cast Steel. I will look and see if I have another iron (not Mathieson marked) that could be used as I have a large selection of spares, but no guarantees. There is a small A stamped at the top of the back side of the iron. The screw holding the chip breaker and iron together appears to be original and turns freely as well. The Sole is well worn from it's age but there are no cracks in the mouth, only some small edge wear. The only other markings on the plane are from one of the original or previous owners and stamped "J Shears" lightly in a few places as shown in the photo. • I wish I knew it's history but I do not, perhaps the previous owners name could provide a clue. • I have not used it but it is in great condition and fully functional with no damage. This would make a great display / collector piece (which is what I've been doing with it) as it is not a common piece and a fairly interesting piece of history. • Payment via paypal, ships USPS priority mail and will be packed extremely well for shipment. Payment via paypal, no returns. I have a very large collection of antique hand tools (most in original non-restored condition) including specialty planes, saws, etc and will be listing many of them over the next few months as I find the time.
