RARE Antique 18th C SPECTACLES Steel Iron FOLDING EYEGLASSES Glasses--- recently purchased at an antique store in Pennsylvania --- They are very expertly crafted by an early maker- it is really getting very hard to find early spectacles such as these. These are similar to the ones you see Ben Franklin wear. They are either cast steel or iron and are the very early form form the 18th C - they could be from the early 19th C as this form was found later as well. We left... them just as we purchases them. We did not even clean the glasses as we like to maintain the history of the item and where it has been. The glasses have one small break in the iron on the one end loop- mentioned for accuracy sake. There are a few minor hips in the glass. The measure approximately 4.5" in width end to end and approx 4" length to first fold and another 2.5" length to end of circular loop. They are in original untouched/uncleaned condition retaining a fantastic aged patina which includes some oxidation and some surface rust. These early ones are getting very hard to find especially in this condition. Please see our other auctions- for other great period accessories- including hearthware, early lighting, etc.
