We purchased this years ago from a collector of period American Revolutionary War Items, several other articles from the same collection are also being offered this week.
This is nearly identical to those illustrated in numerous volumes on artifacts of the Revolutionary War See "The Collectors Encylopedia of the American Revolution" by Nuemann and others. We've included a reference.

The piece is all blacksmith made in period construction. Articles such as this were used to quickly measure shot size to determine the diameter of a cannon ball to see if it would fit in a cannon barrel by placing the shot through the ring prior to inserting it in said cannon.
The cannon ball sizer has a diameter of just about 3 1/4". Cannon balls used were often then wrapped in cloth to allow a tighter "fit" into the barrel the same way a piece of patch would have been wrapped around a musket ball.
There is some minor oxidation to the piece as one would expect from age though overall very good presentation.
Measures 11" in overall length.
Dates from the Revolutionary War period circa 1780.
