Three beautiful limb sections from ancient tree branches with lots of detail. There is a bit of opal in at least one of these, but likely not enough to cut (though you may want to try cutting and polishing one of the ends). The opal deposits in the famous Virgin Valley area of northern Nevada were formed 12-15 million years ago when a series of volcanic events pushed entire forests into an ancient lake. The floating rafts of wood were eventually buried, along with the lake itself, by s...ubsequent deposits of silica-rich volcanic ash. Silica and opal eventually replaced the wood structure. Ancient forms of Chestnut, Cryptomeria, Elm, Ginkgo, Fir, Maple, Oak and Pine have been identified among the preserved woods. Some pieces display precious play of color opalescence, for which this locale is famed. Other pieces, such as these, have great permineralization of the wood structures, but are not completely filled with silica, yielding specimens that are very like real wood in weight and sometimes the ability to tease out individual fibers and splinters. These have a nicely preserved grain, knots, breaks and even a bit of cambium or bark. Some of the exterior is coated with a thin rind of ashy pyroclastic material. They'd make nice display pieces for your collection shelf as-is or mounted.
