These fossil limbs are complete as found, and come from the famous Virgin Valley opal deposits in the northern Nevada. This area is best known for its opalized limbs, sometimes containing precious black opal. The material is found within the petrified, opalized limbs and limb casts from trees (ancient forms of Chestnut, Cryptomeria, Elm, Ginkgo, Fir, Maple, Oak and Pine have been found) which grew some 12-14 million years ago. A series of pyroclastic events pushed successive forests in...to an ancient lake, where they were eventually buried by subsequent volcanism. You may wish to cut and polish one of the ends on the heavier pieces to better show the interior. There is a bit of opal showing on a couple of these, but I think the big attraction is the marvelously preserved details of the original wood. A desirable locale to include in a collection of limb casts/petrified woods, and all of these are interesting.Limb casts are formed when a buried tree or shrub branch is buried and rots away, leaving a void.
