c1900, ANTIQUE CHINESE STRAITS PERANAKAN CEREMONIAL SILVER BELT AND BUCKLE, 643GDescription:Anexceptional ceremonial China Straits solid silver belt and large buckle, datingto the late 19th Century.Made byChinese silversmiths in Singapore/Malay, the large front buckle, of domed ovoidform, is highly decorated in the Chinese taste with a pair of phoenix andornamental fish, surrounded by lotus flowers and other flora andfauna. The belt itself is formed of tightly woven silver wire, s...et withseven embossed panels along its length - a dragon chasing a flaming pearl to thefront, the others with Buddhistic symbols and flowers.Thebuckle is secured to the belt with strong hooks to each end. A hook to theinside of the belt also allows for it to be adjusted in length. The back of thebuckle and three of the silver panels are stamped with Chinese charactersilver/makers marks.
