This is a fabulous walnut Victorian Cylinder Roll Secretary Desk with Bookcase Top (circa 1870). It measures 92.5" (from the floor to the top of the crown), 43.5" in height, 39.5" and 23.5" in depth. The space from the floor to underside of the pull-out leather writing surface measures 29.5" in height. This bookcase was a prominent piece in our Victorian home but we are now downsizing.
The bookcase is graced with elegant crown moulding that is accented below with two horizontal raised burl panels with a carved rosette roundel between them. Lovely geometric picture frame moulding surrounds the elegant original glass doors. These elegant wavy glass doors open to reveal three adjustable walnut shelves that measure 9.5" in depth and 38" in width. An intact working lock with key completes the beautiful bookcase top.
The beautiful bookcase top sits on a gorgeous cylinder roll top base with handsome burl accents on the sides surrounding the cylinder and three large drawers along with fluted scrolled sconces on the sides of the larger second drawer. The double recessed burl panels with fluted moulding on the cylinder roll are lovely and the period ebonized knob pulls are wonderful. Behind the cylinder roll, there are six open pigeon holes compartments, a larger center compartment and a rich cognac leather writing surface with gold trim. Two petite drawers with ebonized pulls are found beneath the pigeon holes. Speaking of storage, there are three larger dovetailed drawers. Each of these three larger drawers is adorned with luscious raised burl panels and fancy period ebonized and brass anchor pulls.
