While the Nivada Taravana is seldom seen, it's not often that you'll find an example in comparable condition to this one. This watch appears to have been worn infrequently and more likely has been stored away for the past several decades. It has a matte black "T SWISS MADE T" signed dial that is in remarkable, blemish free condition. Any wear seen is on the crystal. The original tritium on the dial and hands, which remains fully intact and emits a quick-burst gl...ow after being exposed to bright light, has aged to a perfectly matching warm buttermilk hue. The black bezel, which smoothly rotates bidirectionally, is in pristine condition. The heavy duty, all stainless steel case, which appears to have retained its original finish, is in wonderful condition showing minor wear, no visibly noticeable dents or dings and is free of any signs of oxidation. The outside of the case back is stamped "WATERPROOF 20 ATM STAINLESS STEEL 67032 AUTOMATIC COMPENSAMATIC SHOCKPROTECTED" with "4670" stamped on the inside of the case back. The crystal shows very light scratching and a piece of filament that has settled on its underbelly. In person and certainly on the wrist these imperfections are nearly visually imperceptible.
The 21 jewels Swiss "NIVADA" stamped ETA 2783 automatic movement with quickset date function looks untouched, runs strong, keeps accurate time and the date wheel rolls over as it should at approximately 12 am. The quickset date function works flawlessly by unscrewing the sharply threaded, original 4.5 mm screwdown crown, pulling it out to the first position and then turning it clockwise until the desired date has been reached. After recently winding the crown 39 full revolutions the movement had an impressive power reserve of approximately 45 hours. The crown winds and screws down beautifully. Although the movement runs strong and keeps accurate time, considering that the movement shows no signs of ever having been serviced (there are no visible watchmaker service markings on the inside of the case back or on the movement) a complete overhaul is recommended.
This watch measures approximately 38 mm excluding the crown, approximately 42.5 mm including the crown and approximately 21 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel is approximately 9.5 mm. Including the crystal case thickness measures approximately 10.5 mm. Although the movement runs strong and keeps accurate time, given that it shows no visible signs of ever having been serviced a complete overhaul is recommended. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old-school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. Any servicing costs going forward are your responsibility.
