This rarely seen vintage Wakmann day-date diver has a uniquely beautiful blue satin "T SWISS MADE T" signed dial that in light radiates a sunburst pattern. In my humble opinion it is one of the more lovely dials I've seen. The dial lume dots and the lume on the hands is fully intact, matches perfectly and emits a short-lived glow after being exposed to bright light. The lume has aged gracefully to a subtle pistachio hue. The bezel, which rotates smoothly bidirectional...ly, looks good. The heavy duty all stainless steel case is in wonderful condition, free of any visibly noticeable dents or dings. The outer edge of the case back is stamped "ALL STAINLESS STEEL SWISS MADE WATERPROOF INCABLOC AUTOMATIC" with "20 ATMOS" followed by "1878" stamped in the center. The crystal shows light scratching.
The 17 jewels unadjusted "SWISS MADE" and "FABULEUX" stamped ETA 2789 automatic movement with quickset day and date functions is in near pristine condition, keeps accurate time and the quickset features work flawlessly. The quickset date function, which is in red print, works by pulling out the crown to the second position and then turning the crown clockwise. The quickset day feature, which is in black print, works by pulling out the crown to the second position, just like you would in setting the date, but instead of turning the crown clockwise you turn the crown counterclockwise. Please note that the day wheel is in both Spanish and English. So for every day in English there is also the Spanish equivalent. For example, when you are on Monday and go to manually set the day to Tuesday through the quickset function, you will first see LUN, the Spanish day for Monday, before you will see TUE. You will only see both Spanish and English days when using the quickset function. When manually turning the hands to set the day/date or allowing the watch to roll over to a new day/date automatically, the days will stay in the chosen language. This dual language day wheel is a great feature. After winding the sharply threaded, approximately 5 mm screwdown crown 39 full revolutions the movement had a healthy power reserve of approximately 45 hours. Given that this watch is approximately 45 years old and considering that the movement appears to have only been serviced once during its lifetime (there is one visible watchmaker service marking on the inside of the case back), a complete overhaul is suggested.
This watch measures approximately 35 mm excluding the crown, approximately 40 mm including the crown and approximately 18 mm between the lugs. Case thickness, measured from the bottom of the case back to the top of the bezel, is approximately 10.5 mm. Including the crystal thickness measures approximately 12.5 mm. This watch comes on a one keeper, 19 mm Tropic "style" strap with "STAINLESS STEEL" stamped straight edge buckle. The strap is in good, fully pliable used condition and free of any visible signs of cracking.
Although this watch keeps near perfect time and works as it should, given its vintage nature and considering that it appears to have only been serviced once during its lifetime, a complete overhaul is recommended. As such there are no warranties, express or implied, attached with the sale of this watch. Vintage means old and while my personal belief is that old-school means better quality and workmanship, things can and do go wrong from time to time. Any servicing costs going forward are your responsibility.
