The officers introduced themselves to the brigade's command.We all took potassium iodide to protect the body from radioactive iodine infection. The radiation background in the camp was within normal limits. However, some people were wearing breathing masks and masks-flakes all the time.Each of our company received its own ID-11 dosimeter. One of the officers, including myself, periodically collected dosimeters and in the staff of the brigade using a special device read data and passed them to the company commander for entry into the radiation dose card. The maximum dose of irradiation was set at 25 roentgens. Most wanted to get the dose as soon as possible to get home. As it turned out later, after just a few days of working in the zone, the company's radiation dose exceeded the acceptable limits in one third of the company. The company, fully composed of 12 crews, for the first time went to fulfill the task of deactivating one of the housing estates located within a 30-kilometer zone around the 4th power unit.
