Original Description:
Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Ann Vernon - 1827. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The field of the linen has been stitched with a detailed map of England and Wales which has parts of Scotland, Ireland and France around the edges with various stretches of sea also named, The map has been divided into counties with Yorkshire being the largest and most noticeable. The title - England and Wales - is contained within a curling ribbo...n detail in the upper right area of the linen with flowers entwined around it, whilst Ann's name and the date of 1827 are stitched at the centre of the bottom edge. The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with darker patches from where the black stitch work has bled. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original ebonised frame with a hand painted swag in each of the four corners. The frame is in good condition with good age related patina and scratches, small chips and scuff marks commensurate with its age. There is a small "bite" on the top right edge which can be seen in the tenth photograph, and an old loss to the bottom left outer side which is shown in the penultimate photograph. This is not visible when looking at the sampler head on.  Measures 16 3/4" x 18 1/4" (sight size) and 21 3/4" x 23 1/4"  including the frame.
PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELFI WILL PACK THIS ITEM VERY WELL AND WILL TAPE OVER THE GLASS, BUT DUE TO ITS SIZE I CANNOT GUARANTEE THE GLASS AGAINST BREAKAGE DURING TRANSIT. IF THE BUYER WOULD PREFER THE GLASS TO BE REMOVED PRIOR TO SHIPPING PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
