It began in 1391, continuing with the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, and then from Portugal in 1498. An extremely rare example of the Iberian Hebrew pale...ography of its time, this manuscript on parchment consists of 451 folios in two columns, each with 31 lines. Profusely illuminated in gold, and color, with Mozarabic and Jewish motifs. It includes the books of the Old Testament, the Masorah, and a grammatical treatise, Sefer Ha-Nikud, written by Rabbi David Kimhi (circa 1160−circa 1235).Description: This is a rare example of a Hebrew manuscript containing an explicit signature of the artist. It includes ornamental page borders, full-page illuminations representing Jewish iconography, and smaller illuminations illustrating parts of the Old Testament.Reproduction Details:
The hardcover books are made with two pieces of real wood on the inside. The leather is a 2 oz cowhide, from a small supplier in New York state. The Glue we use to attach the leather to the wood is made at our facility, and is a period correct wheat glue. The pages are pre-creased to add flexibility. Along the spine, we use a modern perfect binding, with modern glue, to make the binding last longer. Then we each signature is sewn into the book block. We also add three layers of mull cloth to the outside of the perfect binding, drying in between each layer, a traditional way to make the binding stiff, strong, and resilient.
