"I also consider myself the inventor of the tray, because at a certain point in our civilisation people no longer knew how to hand over a glass, a message or a poem. I was born into a family with the worst kind of good taste, and I make terrible good taste the key to the liberation of the imagination.— Piero Fornasetti"
Gotta love that attitude. Its priceless to get humor embedded in a material good. This piece is one from the beginning of the Fornasett...i company. The metal tray has been gessoed, lithograpghed ( in the way in which Fornasetti developed to do on non-flat surfaces) and then handpainted with colors and glazed. The base color has mellowed to a ivory color. There is an even crazing of the finish all over the piece, another key to its age.The balloon images are part of his early hand drawing imagery, from his childhood sketch books and painted on the ceiling of his boyhood bedroom. ( the fine lines are reminiscent of Edward Gorey drawings - see our books listed ).
The condition is very good with wear on front and back seen easily in the photographs. The signature is stamped on the back and the back shows wear to the finish also seen in the photos. Obviously, the original owners loved this tray and used it well. Measures approx. 60 cms by 25 cms.
