...r>Thöpa (thod pa) or Kapāla
Even these days some yogic practitioners or Naldjorpa (rnal ‘byor pa) and mantric practitioners or Ngagpa (sngags pa) adhere to the practice of remaining silent in dense forests and high mountain solitudes such as the sacred place of Lapchi at the border of Southern Tibet and Northern Nepal. Our friend Ngagpa Trinle Namgyal (sngags pa ‘phrin las rnam rgyal) lives as a Ngagpa or mantric practitioner, wearing a bone ornament on the hairknot and eating and drinking his meager diet solely from his skull cup as part of his tantric lifestyle and commitments.
Certain h*man sk*ll c*ps, known in Sanskrit as Kapāla and in Tibetan as a Thöpa (thod pa), has extraordinary qualities. The prefix of the word kapāla, ka, means time, and pāla means ruler or governor. Thus, one’s sk*ll is regarded as the superior place of one’s body and existence. Moreover, in the context of traditional Vajrayana and Dzogchen the sk*ll is used as cup or container as it is natural and unmodified (ma bcos pa) and self-originated (rang ‘byung), not fabricated by the human hand and mind.
In general it is there where the ordinary, mundane and confused world is transformed into its essential and pure nature. The five poisons and five worldly elements of earth, water, fire, air and space, become the Five Wisdoms. In rituals kapālas can be used as the vehicle for making pure offerings to Buddhas, Yidams, Protectors, Dakinis and other enlightened guests, or for making a damaru. More generally it is said that by taking food from the kapāla begging bowl, the yogi is reminded of impermanence. However, the functions and qualities of a kapāla are not just symbolic. In fact, eating from a properly prepared sk*ll cup has remarkable effects on the energetic and nutritive qualities of the food itself.
