A Matching Pair of AntiqueChinese Hard Wood Scholar's Boxes Possibly Huanghuali wood.Circa 1800s.The pair of boxes are made ofhard wood. The grains are beautiful.The clasps on the front aremade of brass and made in the shape of a ru-yi auspicious symbol.These are boxes for a scholar’sdesk. They have no other decoration and follow a Chinese scholar’s asceticpreference.Assembled in tongue andgroove technique. No nails were used.Huanghuali is a hard woodfavoured by Chinese connoisseur...s. It is one of the most expensive and rare woodin the world.Excellent antique condition.Signs of use.One of the boxes has a coupleof stain marks on the lid that might be removed, although I have not tried toremove them.
