I have been collecting/dealing in Antiques and Collectibles for well over 45 years. Most of the treasures that I acquire are direct from estates or houses. Over the time that I have been been doing this I have ended up setting aside items that were either of specific interest to me or that I felt were especially "unique and eclectic". This has ended up with my having a rather extensive "personal" collection. I am now at a point in my life that I have to limit this addiction and in fact actually downsize my "collection(s)!" I suggest that you consider adding me to your list of sellers that you follow as I will be offering many "decommissioned" treasures as well as the extensive new acquisitions that I continue to pursue in my semi-retirement!
Those of you that follow my listings have noted that many of my descriptions include historical background. I do this in the hope that it will inspire many, with emphasis being focused on the younger generations towards reviving interest in our heritage and the artistic creativity of our forefathers. All of us have a rich history in common. This is something that we should be curious and proud of! I also invite any and all questions that interested parties may have. It gives me the opportunity to pass on many years of experience. That is what it is all about!
I find this wonderful tape measure interesting in that it advertises and presumably was a premium from a company that seems to be as remotely connected to the woman of the house as possible. What prompted them to create a small tape measure that would best fit use in sewing work?
Originally founded 1854 in Boston Massachusetts, the Chapman Manufacturing Co. produced fire hydrants with Babbitt metal seals. In 1874 the company name was changed to Chapman Valve Mfg. Co. moving to a new. large factory complex in Indian Orchard where they produced their slide gate hydrant that made them famous. An interesting side note, 1948-1949 one of the buildings at the Chapman Indian Orchard site machined uranium metal for the Manhattan Engineer District and the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission to support Brookhaven National Laboratory defense related projects.
Civil War Veteran Edward Taylor Lufkin founded the E.T. Lufkin Board and Log Rule Manufacturing Company 1869 in Cleveland, Ohio. They began making steel tape measures in 1887. Lufkin was the largest manufacturer of steel measuring tapes in the United States by 1903.
This wonderful steel tape measure is approximately 1½" in diameter. It has Chapman Valve Mfg. Co. logo and advertising on one side with an ornate geometric decoration and release button on the other.
