Up for sale is this rare antique 1st American edition of Lavater's, "Essays on Physiognomy; for the Promotion of the Knowledge and the Love of Mankind." The book is overall in good condition with some typical signs of wear and age. It has no printed publishing date, but is circa sometime around 1794. The leather covers have some mild scuffing and wear. The binding of the book is good and sound. There are some chips to the endpapers with a gutter tear... to the ffep a few inches in length. The interior is toned from age with some foxing, light soiling/grubbiness and occasional light marginal staining. A few pages have a small chip or tear; however, no text is affected. Along with that there may be the very occasional page with some kind of other imperfection such as a creased page corner, minor marking, wrinkle, etc. Generally though, it's a good copy. As called for, the book is 272 pages long and is illustrated with 7 black and white plates. It measures approximately 6 3/4 inches by 4 1/4 inches.
