1873 Elgin National Watch Company 15 Jewel Grade 62 H.Z. Culver Adjusted Quick Size 18s Key wind and set Pocket Watch. Very early serial number 276, 503. Heavy 4 oz. Newport Coin Silver Case. Runs strong and keeps pretty good time!An original dial is signed Elgin National Watch Co. Very massive 4 oz. Newport Coin Silver Case serial number 440775 in good condition. Covers close and open well. The movement is almost pristine for a watch that's 146 years old! Good looking crystal glass wi...thout scratches or chips. Winds and sets as it should. A key and a stylish pocket watch chain are included. Runs strong, keeps pretty good time, but was not timed for accuracy, so assume some service may be needed. Elgin National Watch Company was founded in 1864, right as the civil war was coming to an end. The first watch Elgin was finished in April of 1867 and over the next 100 years, they went on to produce about 60 million mechanical watches. It was the largest watch factory in the world. Howard Z. Culver was one of the original investors of the Elgin National Watch Co.Elgin was originally called the "National Watch Company". The name never really stuck and in 1874, they changed their name to the "Elgin National Watch Company" because most of the watch trade and public were calling them "watches from Elgin". They kept that name until the late 1960s when they stopped producing watches.
