Being offered is a nice old antique late 19th century Dayak mandau sword from Borneo. This sword measures 26 3/4" in length when measured in its scabbard and excluding the hair at the top which adds a few more inches to the length. The handle is staghorn and is very well carved. You see arms, some type of creature head, a mouth with teeth along with other symbols. There are 4 hair tufts, one of which has been cut down a good bit and the top one with some of the ...hairs having a trim. There are two more plugs which would have also had hair but all that remains is just the plug. Nice rattan wrap on the grip. The organic plug that would have been at the very bottom of the grip is gone. The blade is interesting. It has a very bright finish so it was most likely chromed or nickel plated at some time in its life. The blade has a long multi row of inlaid circles done in copper and a few in a silver colored metal. At the forte is a four by four grid of circles inlaid in copper. Nice scabbard. The wood with a lovely patina to it. The front has a lovely triangular shaped raised carving with various shapes and figures. You have a row of 4 very old rattan bands and then the very bottom of the scabbard has some kind of carving. The back of the scabbard has a nice rattan belt that is complete but the rattan bands holding it to the scabbard are not as old as the other rattan bands so probably a working life repair to keep the belt with the scabbard. All in all, a nice and interesting Dayak sword. Please e-mail with any questions. Please view my other auctions for a great variety of swords, daggers and tribal art.
