Antique 19th Century Surgical Trephine Skull Bone Brain Drill Saw Medical Tool

From the former collection of the National Museum of Hospital and Pharmaceutical History, a superb example of the 19th century surgical instrument maker’s art. This authentic original Trephine bears the mark of former silversmith, George P. Pilling of Philadelphia. Pilling is one of the first surgical instrument manufacturers in the United States, beginning in 1814.
This trephine is in the same condition that I got it in - uncleaned. Very fine condition. Does have some faint scrat...ches but still shines nicely. It has a retractable tip adjusted with a perfectly working thumbscrew. The drill is tight and sharp, with a nice taper. Measures approx. 4.5” tall with a diameter of 0.75”. I’ve seen other examples that have damage to the handle or are missing teeth. This Trephine has all of it’s teeth and a perfectly intact handle with a smooth patina. A truly fine instrument perfect for the collector!
