Original Description:
Very small late 19th century sampler by E.Atkinson. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1875 or slightly earlier Worked in red wool on a soft gauze, this little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, the numbers 1 through to 7, and border patterns, whilst the lower section contains E.Atkinson's name with - God Is Love - stitched beneath, a small ...cross motif to their left and right. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with general minor grubbiness and small patches of faint staining. The red of the thread is good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colour would have looked it was first stitched.Measures 7 1/2" x 5"
