ITEM DESCRIPTION: White Star Line RMS OLYMPIC / BRITANNIC - Era Egg Spoon (1913)
A lovely little egg spoon for the White Star Line. I have not found this patter...n elsewhere and believe that it was designed specifically for the White Star Line. The Class 1 (Metal) Design Registration Number dates this pattern to 1911, making it another pattern specifically designed for the OLYMPIC-class. The posterior of the handle is marked with the following: Rd number “579752, ” date stamp “B” in quatrefoil for 1913, quality mark "A, " “Elkington Plate” and the E&Co. shield, both in intaglio, and a stamped wedge cross pattee ✠. Many modern researchers assume that this mark indicated 2nd Class wares, but I disagree. I speculate that they were used for ships on the White Star Line - Dominion Line Canadian Service or perhaps in the Pursers or Officers Mess. Shared galley and dish washing facilities for 1st and 2nd Class would be neither economic nor efficient if the department had to sort through thousands of wares, looking for a cross.
The spoon is in excellent condition, with some light wear marks to the base of the bowl. Wear is commensurate to its age and use. SEE PHOTOS FOR CONDITION.

Personal Conservator Notes on Historical Artifacts and Ephemera:
• All Items are from my personal collection. These are historically invaluable treasures to me, and I do my best to treat them as such.• All items are stored and displayed in a smoke free home or storage area. • I try to maintain a RH of 45-55%, with an ambient temperature of 74 degrees. These are the most important factors for a collection.• I do not use flash photography on ephemera or textiles.• I do not display artifacts or ephemera in direct sunlight.• I handle documents and photos with the use of white cotton research gloves. • I handle unstable ceramics and glass with the use of nitrile gloves.• I hand wash and dry silver goods. I limit the polishing of silver, as this process removes a layer of plating each time. However, many of the sale items will receive a light polish to enhance their appearance and defects in the photos. • This item was displayed or photographed in a home with a small dog, a Japanese Chin. Keep this in mind if you have dog hair allergies.
