Rare antique large (approx. 1-5/8" tall with bale and jump ring; weight approx. 12.3 g) Catholic medal featuring iconic images ofthe Crucified Savior with the Five Sacred Wounds, and the Most Blessed Virgin Mary with the Child Jesusdepicted as the venerated Our Lady of Czestochowa icon with inscriptions inPolish and Latin languages.The Crucifixion and Five Sacred Wounds side is framed with the following inscription in Polish language, "O MOJ CUDOWNY W MILATYNIE BOZEI NIECH MIE TW...A LASKA W POTRZEBIE W SPOMOZE" meaning approx. "O MY GREAT LORD, SHOW ME YOUR GRACE IN NEED OF HELP". The Marian side is framed with inscription in Latin, "SANCTA MARIA CZESTOCHOWSKIEY". Origin likely c. late 19th century in association withthe Jasna Gora Monastery in Czestochowa, Poland, where the revered icon of theBlack Madonna is enshrined. The medal appears to have been made from heavy bronze or similar copper alloy. It shows significantsigns of wear consistent with its suggested age including deformations of theoriginal shape, reduced quality of images and inscriptions, scratches, dents, and original uncleaned dark patina.
