1860s CDV PHOTO OF CIVIL WAR UNION GENERAL PHIL SHERIDAN ON CABINET CARD MOUNT
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:2786771 |
This original CDV Portrait Photograph of General Sheridan is a near ¾ length, seated portrait with Sheridan in uniform and wearing the shoulder boards of a General in the Union Army. The Image was taken by Mathew Brady and was first published by E. & H. T. Anthony & Co. Brady's negatives along with a large number of unmounted Albumen Photographs were obtained by John C. Taylor of Hartford, Connecticut who republished many Stereoviews from Brady’s War for the Union series in the years following the War. While we have handled hundreds of the Taylor Civil War Stereoviews over the past 39+ years, we have never encountered this type of CDV Photograph mounted on a Cabinet Card Mount that were also, obviously, issued by Taylor. The Image affixed to this card does not appear to be a later Photo printed from the Brady negative but rather an original E. & H. T. Anthony printed, unmounted Albumen CDV Photograph which was later mounted by Taylor on his own, Cabinet card size mount. The Image offered here carries Taylor advertisement and mark on the reverse.
Philip Henry Sheridan (March 6, 1831 – August 5, 1888) was a career United States Army officer and a Union general in the American Civil War. His career was noted for his rapid rise to major general and his close association with Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, who transferred Sheridan from command of an infantry division in the Western Theater to lead the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac in the East. In 1864, he defeated Confederate forces in the Shenandoah Valley and his destruction of the economic infrastructure of the Valley, called "The Burning" by residents, was one of the first uses of scorched earth tactics in the war. In 1865, his cavalry pursued Gen. Robert E. Lee and was instrumental in forcing his surrender at Appomattox.
Sheridan prosecuted the later years of the Indian Wars of the Great Plains, tainting his reputation with some historians, who accuse him of racism. Both as a soldier and private citizen, he was instrumental in the development and protection of Yellowstone National Park. In 1883 Sheridan was appointed general-in-chief of the U.S. Army, and in 1888 he was promoted to the rank of four-star general by President Grover Cleveland.
This rare and original, CDV Portrait of Civil War General Phil Sheridan is in very good condition. The Photograph itself exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. The Image is generally clean and crisp but does have light foxing. The card mount has light soiling and light edge wear.
