Reference Number: Avaluer:2786786
Original Description:
Very rare and original, 1860's CDV Photograph of Union Civil War Lieut. General John White Geary. This original, period CDV Photograph measures approx. 2 1/8” by 3 3/8” and is mounted on its original, photographer's Cabinet Card Mount (overall size is 4 1/4" by 6 1/2"). A printed slip affixed to the card mount below the Image features text that reads "Brevet Major General J. W. Geary".
This original CDV Portrait Photograph of General Geary is a vignette, ...bust portrait with Geary in uniform and wearing the shoulder boards of a General in the Union Army. The Image was taken by Mathew Brady and was first published by E. & H. T. Anthony & Co. Brady's negatives along with a large number of unmounted Albumen Photographs were obtained by John C. Taylor of Hartford, Connecticut who republished many Stereoviews from Brady’s War for the Union series in the years following the War. While we have handled hundreds of the Taylor Civil War Stereoviews over the past 39+ years, we have never encountered this type of CDV Photograph mounted on a Cabinet Card Mount that were also, obviously, issued by Taylor. The Image affixed to this card does not appear to be a later Photo printed from the Brady negative but rather an original E. & H. T. Anthony printed, unmounted Albumen CDV Photograph which was later mounted by Taylor on his own, Cabinet card size mount. The Image offered here carries Taylor advertisement and mark on the reverse.
John White Geary was an important national figure during the middle years of the 19th century and had aspirations of being the Democratic Presidential Nominee during the years after the Civil War. In January of 1849, immediately following his service as an Officer in the Mexican War, he was appointed by President Polk to be the first Postmaster of San Francisco and instructed to establish the US Postal System throughout California. He was a member of the California Constitutional Convention and was both the last American Alcalade of San Francisco (elected in August of 1849) and the First Mayor of San Francisco (chosen May 1, 1850). He served as Mayor for 1 year and returned to Pennsylvania on leave of absence. Upon his return home his wife died (as well as a number of other family members) and Geary never returned to California. In July of 1856, General Geary was appointed Governor of Kansas. His strong antislavery views forced his resignation after numerous confrontations with pro-slavery forces. At the start of the Civil War Geary raised 68 Companies from his home state and served as Brigadier General and Commanding Officer of the 28th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. From 1867 to 1873 he served as the Governor of Pennsylvania and left that office with aspirations for the US Presidency. He died suddenly only 3 weeks after leaving the Governor’s Office while preparing breakfast for his son.
This rare and original, CDV Portrait of Civil War General John White Geary is in very good condition. The Photograph itself exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. The Image is clean and crisp while the card mount has light soiling and light edge wear.
